The Queen opens new clubhouse at Smith's Lawn

I was very privileged to get an invitation to see HM The Queen open the new Guards Polo clubhouse at Smith's lawn on Sunday. The sun shone and Her Majesty surprised us all by driving herself to the venue in a green estate car! Looking very spring-like in yellow she and Prince Philip were in fine spirits.

The clubhouse is very impressive, and right now you can join the Guards Polo Club for £300 a year. Berkshire & Chilterns Life readers can take advantage of a special offer whereby the joining fee of £150 is waived. Call 01784 434212 for details.

Windsor Wheel is back

It's great to see the Windsor Wheel back. I had a ride on it the other evening and from my perch spied two huge spotlights where Elton John's house is in Old Windsor. I couldn't make out whether they were floodlights for a football pitch or just security lights. Can anyone enlighten me? Whatever they were, they were certainly adding to light pollution and probably confusing aircraft to boot!

Talking about diets on the radio

BBC Radio Berkshire called me up this morning and asked me if I'd ever been on a really weired diet. I had to think for a minute, then I remembered about 15 years ago I did the Mars bar diet. I had one Mars bar for breakfast, one for lunch and one for dinner and that was it. I managed to stick at it for four whole days but didn't manage to lose more than a pound I think! Now I'm much more sensible and know there's now substitute for healthy eating and lots of exercise - but then it's an awful lot harder the older you get to shed those unwanted pounds!

Valley Gardens

One of the most beautiful places in Britain - no the world- at this time of year has to be the Valley gardens in Windsor Great Park. I went there with my family on Sunday and was absolutely enchanted by the azealas and rhododendrons. It's early days yet, but many blooms were out already. If this glorious spring sunshine keeps up, there'll be lots more to see this weekend. I can't wait!
